Degree Apprenticeship - Level 6 Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer

Course Aim:

A Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer Degree Apprentice will be able to use the knowledge, skills and behaviours developed to enable systems and equipment to operate safely, efficiently and in an environmentally suustainable way. A Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer Degree Apprentice's typical job role will include design, plant performance enhancements, operational management, project management and maintenance of safety standards utilising analytical thinking to provide innovative solutions.


Student Pre-Requisites:

Students are likely to be aged 18+ years and hold a minimum of 96 UCAS points (equivalent to the previous rating of 240).  This total can have been gained either at ‘A’-level in appropriate STEM subjects, or, alternatively, a National Certificate at Level 3 (such as BTEC) either in Science or Engineering.  In addition, prospective candidates must have achieved a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at grades 9 to 5 (equivalent to the previous GCSE A to C grades) and which include Maths, English Language and an appropriate Science subject.


Course Duration:

This degree apprenticeship can be delivered via a number of delivery models.  Typically this is a 5 year programme incorporating the Foundation Degree and BEng Honours Degree.


Location and Delivery Model:

The academic course is delivered by Gen2 in Energus, Lillyhall, Workington.

Delivery Plan and Commitment:

The qualification requires 20% of time from the student’s normal working week to be committed to the qualification for the duration of the programme. This time must be away from normal work duties.


Qualification Gained:

Foundation Degree and BEng Honours Degree in Plant Engineering with one of the following pathways:

  • Instrumentation & Control Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Nuclear Plant & Process Technology
  • Quality Engineering
