Design & Draughting Apprenticeship Standard Level 3 (out of centre learner)

Course Aim:

This apprenticeship is ideal for candidates looking to for those wishing to pursue an engineering design career.  As an out of centre learner you will be either already working with your employer and are looking to gain nationally recongised qualifications or will be a new apprentice who will be based with your employer from day one.

Engineering design and draughtspersons produce designs and drawings for structures, piping, electrical systems, control and instrumentation systems and mechanical components used in industrial and commercial construction. Typically, jobholders work in a wide range of industries of national importance including power and water infrastructure, petrochemical, oil and gas, nuclear, food and drink processing.  Jobholders are based at office locations within project design teams and occasionally work at on-site locations. They are required to understand on-site hazards and health and safety requirements.

 

Student Pre-Requisites:

The entry requirement for this apprenticeship will typically be five GCSEs including English and maths at  Grade C or higher or new grading equivalent.  Students will also have to pass the Gen2 aptitude test.

 

Course Duration:

Typically this apprenticeship will take 42 months

 

Location and delivery model:

Training for this apprenticeship  will take place at a Gen2 centre based in West Cumbria, Carlisle and Furness.

 

The programme delivered through Gen2 will consist of:

Year 1 - Apprentices would be based with their employer from day one and attend an agreed Gen2 centre one day per week for their Technical Certificate.

Year 2 - Apprentices continue to study their Technical Certificate with Gen2 one day per week. The students are visited by Gen2 staff every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress.

Years 3 and 4 - The students are visited by Gen2 staff every six weeks to assess their competence and monitor progress.

Apprentices will be required to have or achieve level 2 English and maths prior to completion of their Apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship is awarded on successful completion of the End Point Assessment.

 Programme Components:

An engineering design and draughtsperson will be able to understand and have knowledge to:

  • Work safely at all times, complying with relevant national and industry health and safety requirements 
  • Work in accordance with company management systems, policies and procedures 

  • Employ the appropriate use of computer based technology 

  • Review and interpret technical information and requirements from different sources e.g. specifications, concepts, stakeholders 

  • Identify inaccuracies or discrepancies in engineering drawings and specifications and propose solutions 

  • Identify and assess factors that affect designs e.g. materials, application, location, risk and environment

  • Design engineering concepts to solve engineering challenges

  • Develop effective solutions which satisfy the required standards and can be manufactured, proven, operated and maintained in a cost-effective way whilst minimising costs

  • Evaluate engineering designs to determine the most effective solution

  • Produce detailed engineering drawings to relevant standards and codes, using paper and computer

  • Check completed drawings for quality, technical compliance and completeness - both own or those of peers

  • Communicate and co-ordinate engineering design options with relevant stakeholders, colleagues and clients using sketches, schemes, models, detailed drawings and reports.

 

Delivery Plan and Commitment:

The qualification requires 20% of time from the student’s normal working week to be committed to the qualification for the duration of the programme. This time must be away from normal work duties.

 

Qualification Gained:

On successful completion of this apprenticeship learners will achieve:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Construction - Design and Draughting Level 3 Diploma in Engineering Construction - Design and Draughting
  • Level 3 BTEC in Operations and Maintenance
