Commercial Procurement & Supply Apprenticeship Standard Level 4 (out of centre learner)

Course Aim:

This apprenticeship is ideal for candidates who are looking to gain a nationally recognised qualification in procurement and supply.  The work of procurement and supply professionals includes the process of procurement, or buying goods and services; however, these roles can be much broader than just procurement. These roles can extend to a huge range of related commercial activity such as influencing policy, financial analysis, engaging in contract law, and developing strategy to deliver services.

Student Pre-Requisites:

Individual employers will set their own entry requirements for their apprentices. Typically candidates will have achieved a grade C or above in at least 5 GCSEs including English and maths (or new grading equivalent) Students will also be required to pass a Gen2 aptitude test.


Course Duration:

Typically this apprenticeship will take 24 months.


Location and Delivery Model:

Training for this apprenticeship will take place at a Gen2 centre based in West Cumbria, Carlisle or Furness.

Year 1 - Apprentices are based with their employer from day one and would typically attend one of our Skills centres one day per month for the taught classroom element of their qualification. During year one students will complete a Level 4 CIPS diploma course (including 5 exams).

Year 2 - Students will complete a showcase piece of work and a case study to demonstrate applied learning.

In addition to the above students will be set work involving guided reading, self test questions, mock exams, learning outcomes and exam technique development. This additional element allows the student to achieve the mandatory 20% off the job training for their apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship is awarded on successful completion of the End Point Assessment.

 Programme Components:

The programme delivered through Gen2 will consist of:

  • Completion and achievement of a L4 Diploma in Procurement & Supply with the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS)
  • Regular performance reviews undertaken by the employer and Gen2 assessor
  • Development of a portfolio of evidence including reports, assignments, and evidence of tasks undertaken.
  • Observations in the workplace
  • Ongoing professional discussions between apprentice and Gen2 assessor relating to workplace competence and knowledge.
  • Feedback from line manager and peers including 180/360 degree feedback approaches.
  • Apprentices will be required to have or achieve level 1 English and maths and to have attempted level 2 English and maths tests prior to completion of their apprenticeship.


The knowledge element of this apprenticeship will enable a Commercial Procurement and Supply professional to understand and have knowledge of:

  • Context of procurement and supply
  • Pre-procurement and early market engagement
  • Sourcing and contract agreements
  • Supplier management
  • Category management


Delivery Plan and Commitment:

The qualification requires 20% of time from the student’s normal working week to be committed to the qualification for the duration of the programme. This time must be away from normal work duties.

Qualification Gained:

  • Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths (GCSE equivalent)
  • L4 Diploma in Procurement & Supply with the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS))
